We woke up in the morning and did our routine. I always pack up the sleeping bags, and am the last one out of the tent. Since I carry the tent, my pack has to be organized last.
We were on our feet quickly and back to the canal. Our goal was Point-Remy, where we were targeting the large E LeClerc grocery store. Miriam had one or two granola bars to eat, the rest of us had little to nothing. Truthfully I felt fine, but I did feel bad that we had run out of food.
The morning walk along the canal went by quickly, and soon we were at the store. Alex and the kids went inside, and I stayed with our bags. When she came out, she instructed me to wolf down some chips and salsa before we started hiking, which I did with much haste.
Content to have food again, we moved on to tackle our next major task: moving past the last city on the route, Abbeville. Sadly, the GR 800 does not go into the city, but we would see it.
We made our way through villages on the outskirts of Abbeville, then up to beautiful plateau of farm fields which gave us a great view of the town.
Once down close to the city, we stopped while I headed in to the last grocery stop on our route. I got some bacon for the kids, among other things. We spoil them for dinner while we are hiking, they get hot dogs and bacon on most nights.
We left Abbeville behind, and kept going towards our final camp of the hike. We had been moving well all day and the kids were getting tired. If we could just push a little farther, we could make it back to the canal and set up our tent.
By late afternoon, I caved and played cards with Daniel while we walked. He had brought along his Top Trump soccer player cards, and the game is basically to compare an aspect of two players (goals, age, etc.) to determine a winner. He has all the cards memorized by now, so it can be a bit repetitive, but it keeps us moving forward.
Eventually, we made it back to the canal in Petit-Port, and I set up our tent in the nice mowed grass in the picnic area. I didn’t knownit, but I made a big mistake in setting up the tent near the only grill. As soon as I finished, some teenagers showed up and starting grilling, playing music, and being loud.
It was a shame to end our last night on the trail with this nuisance, but we persevered and they left at 10PM, after the children had already fallen asleep. The next day would be our last on the trail.
